Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing gives you the experience of following a person in their job. Ask someone you or your family knows if you can observe them. You can also request a contact through a professional association or school program.

Neighborhood Work

You can develop valuable work skills when you do small jobs for friends, family and neighbors. You can mow lawns, rake leaves, do other yard work, babysit, pet care, or help an elderly person with chores. To get paid jobs, you may want to develop a “fee for service” list you can post on area bulletin boards or neighborhood websites.

School & Community Activities

Participating in clubs, sports, theatre, music, dance, religious organizations and other community activities can be fun and develop your skills. To find activities, contact your school, neighborhood community organizations, local arts groups, religious organizations and the public library. Participating in these activities can help to build your resume.

Volunteer Work

Volunteering is unpaid work. You can gain skills in general office work, writing, child care, teaching, fundraising, mentoring, and sales, construction, arts and much more. Call, email or stop by a nonprofit or school where you would like to volunteer and ask about opportunities. Many will provide training.
